The Magician

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of doing a Back To School Night at a local preschool! They had hired a magician as entertainment for the evening.  As we were packing up to go home he stopped me.

He said, "Usborne, that's the company that sells those magic kits, right?"

I replied, "Yes, we do".

He said,  "That kit forever changed my life!  When I was a kid, my Grandmother bought it for me.  It not only taught me the craft of magic but it also taught me presentation skills. You have the greatest job ever! You get to be a piece of a puzzle in other peoples lives. You get to inspire the Houdini's of the world. You get to grow the interest of the Cousteau's of the world. Who knows, you may have already sold a book to the mom of the 50th President!!!  It doesn't just end at growing their interests. You have to keep in mind that every book you sell teaches multiple things. Like with me and the magic book. I was so excited to show off what I learned that I did a magic show for my family and that is when I started learning presentation skills which I use daily. Don't ever stop doing what you do. We need people like you to help inspire kids!"

I felt like a message from above had been delivered to me!  I honestly had struggled with my passion. I know that I love Usborne and the books. I know that the books can do great things in the short term like helping a child learn to read or expand their love of dinosaurs. But I hadn't really thought about the long term impact. To know that I have an opportunity to influence someone's career or their mark on the world... that is incredible! From now on I won't think of my self as a book seller, instead, I will think of myself as an 'interest builder' and a 'future creator'.  I will think of myself as someone who inspires others to dream big dreams. Will you do that? Can you be a fellow 'future catalyst'?
